Granby was settled in1800 and was named in honor of Lord Granby,the commander of the British army in theSeven Years War. It was incorporated as atown in 1855. The population, chiefly French,was 4,750 in 1911; in 1916, estimated by theCensus Bureau, 5,000. j.a.t. GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC, apatriotic American society whose membership,composed of Northernveteran soldiers, isgradually decreasingas the War of Seces-sion, which was re-sponsible for itsfounding, recedesinto history. It wasorganized on April 6,1866, a year after theclose of the war, atDecatur, 111. The pur-pose of its founderswas to strengthen theties that bound intofellowship the soldiersand sailors who foughtto preserve the Union.They sought also toperpetuate the mem-ory of those who sacrificed their lives for thecause, and to give to those who had been leftin need by the death of their protectors.

GRAND BANKS 2559 GRAND CANYON OF THE COLORADO Any soldier or sailor of the United Statesarmy, navy or marine corps, who served be-tween April 12, 1861, and April 9, 1865, and washonorably discharged, and members of stateregiments who were subject to orders of UnitedStates officers, were admitted as members ofthe society, which grew in numbers until 1890,when the maximum membership of 409,489 wasreached. In that j^ear 5,476 veterans died, andthe steadily increasing death rate had reducedthe membership to fewer than 135,000 at thebeginning of 1917. The Grand Army is divided into local postsand departments representing the states, andannual meetings, known as encampments, areheld in the various large cities of the country.On official occasions members wear a darkblue uniform and a slouch hat. Though theGrand Army is in no sense a political organiza-tion, it has had a noticeable influence on pen-sion legislation. The society has been espe-cially active in charitable w
